How to become an election commissioner (poll worker)or recertify as an election commissioner

To serve as a Certified Commissioner one must meet the following qualifications:

  1. be a qualified voter who is not entitled to assistance in voting;
  2. not be a candidate for public office in the election or a child, brother, sister, parent or spouse of a candidate in the election to public office in the precinct in which he/she may serve;
  3. not have been convicted of an election offense;
  4. have attended a course of instruction for commissioners;
  5. have successfully passed an election commissioner’s test

Training for Poll Workers

There are two steps for training to become an election commissioner:

  2. Take the virtual test here.

Note:

  1. Follow the instructions until test is complete.
  2. Click “Print Screen” in the top right corner to print your test results.
  3. You must EITHER email your results to clerk@jacksonparishclerk.org, bring in a copy of your results to the Jackson Parish Clerk of Court Office, 500 E. Court St., Room 103, Courthouse Bldg, Jonesboro, LA, or mail a copy of your results to Jackson Parish Clerk of Court, PO Box 730, Jonesboro, LA 71251.

Upon successfully passing the test and your results being provided to the Clerk of Court office, your name will be placed on the roster of Certified Commissioners from which Commissioners are drawn to serve in each election. You will be certified through December 31st of the year of expiration of the term of office of the clerk who conducted the school. The pay for election commissioners for each election is $200.

Commissioner-In-Charge

Course of Instruction

In accordance with La. R.S. 18:424 & 18:433: A training session for Commissioners-in Charge to serve in the various polling places of Jackson Parish during elections held in 2025 will be held virtually and all qualified persons are invited to attend.

To serve as a Commissioner-in-Charge, one must:

  1. Be a qualified voter of the Parish and able to vote without assistance;
  2. Not be a candidate for election to public office nor be a member of the immediate family of a candidate for election in the precinct in which he serves;
  3. Not ever have been convicted of an election offense;
  4. Have successfully completed a course of instruction such as this, and
  5. Have served as a commissioner in at least two elections during the last four (4) years.

This training will be held virtually on our website the entire month of December, 2024, at www.jacksonparishclerk.org.

Upon satisfactorily completion of the Commissioner-in-Charge training, you must EITHER email your results to clerk@jacksonparishclerk.org, bring in a copy of your results to the Jackson Parish Clerk of Court Office, 500 E. Court St., Room 103, Courthouse Bldg, Jonesboro, LA, or mail a copy of your results to Jackson Parish Clerk of Court, PO Box 730, Jonesboro, LA 71251.

The Jackson Parish Board of Supervisors of Elections will meet in the Office of the Register of Voters, Courthouse Building, 1st Floor, Jonesboro, La. at 10:00 o’clock A. M. on January 10, 2025, and in open session select from the list of certified persons the Commissioners-in-charge to serve for the year 2025.
